Review

Aroma: 18/20

Lovely dark grain smell with prominent notes of roasted malt, hints of chocolate and even a suggestion of coffee.

Appearance: 9/10

It pours a deep, dark brown colour with a light, tan-coloured head. The head lingers beautifully and departs with light lacing.

Flavour: 35/40

The taste is exactly as expected from the smell. Infused with a hint of sweetness, Striped Horse offers coffee, chocolate and creamy malt on the palate. Less sugary than the popular Castle Milk Stout, Striped Horse’s offering has a dryer aftertaste and a hint of bitterness, which do well to add to the balanced feel of the beer.

Mouthfeel: 8/10

Expect the creamy texture and mouthfeel that can only come with lactose as one of the ingredients.

Overall Impression: 16/20

Clearly designed to challenge SAB’s Castle Milk Stout, Striped Horse does a good job with a beer that’s dryer, slightly more bitter and multi-layered than the larger brand’s offering.  Whether it’s worth the extra 15% or so on the price of a case, will depend purely on personal preference.
