The games Roblox and Fortnite are phenomenally popular and achieve reach that most companies would dream of, particularly among children. Because of this, they have become attractive targets for scams and cyberattacks with a recent study expose from Wired.com revealing literally hundreds of false ads placed on otherwise reputable sites.

Even government and organization websites are not immune to these deceptive links, which pretend to offer free game downloads, but actually collect personal information, or force users to take surveys, download apps or install malicious software.  Some of these scams try to steal account information, encourage children to follow certain influencers on social media or falsely boost advertising numbers on campaigns.

Online games with in-game purchases, especially those played by children, have always been targets for scams. Last year, a cybersecurity company, Kaspersky discovered that Minecraft, Roblox, and FIFA faced more cyberattacks than other games. Over 200,000 people downloaded a Google Chrome extension claiming to be a Roblox tool but was actually a way to steal user information.

Researchers have traced these deceptive links to servers belonging to a U.S. advertising company called CPABuild. Searching for CPABuild online reveals guides on how to make quick money using their tools, many of which promise free in-game content or currency.

Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, wants players to know that there is no legitimate way to buy, trade, give, or exchange V-Bucks, the in-game currency. Roblox developers also warn players not to trade their currency, Robux, through third-party sites because they are likely scams. Parents whose kids play Roblox, Fortnite, or similar games with in-game purchases should remind them to be careful with their login information. It’s essential to protect their accounts from these scams.
